Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Safety Tips for Devices with Lithium-Ion Batteries

  • For e-scooters, e-bikes and electronic micro mobility devices, the safest place to charge them is outside, away from doors and windows. DO NOT CHARGE THEM INSIDE.
  • Charge on a hard, flat surface
  • Avoid charging on beds, couches, or under pillows (don’t sleep with your phone!)
  • Always use the original charging cable that came with the device.
  • Don’t overcharge the device or battery after it is fully charge (take it off the charger when charged – don’t leave it plugged in!)
  • Use devices that are labeled “UL” listed device (avoid off brand knock offs!).
  • Only UL-certified scooters are allowed inside residence halls & apartments and need to have the Housing Eligible tag visible. Register your Ride with TAPS
  • Dispose of batteries the correct way. Never throw them in regular trash or recycling bins. Recycle with Campus Business Services
